Cooling systems are the main water consumers in power plants because a substantial quantity of heat must be removed to condense the steam required to drive turbine generators. Previously, cooling was provided by water sources such as rivers and lakes, but increasingly, power plants are using dry cooling systems that consume little to no water. These systems are more expensive to install but utilise 95% less water than wet cooling systems.

 

Coal, biomass, natural gas, and several other forms of power plants generate electricity by boiling water to produce steam, which is then passed through a turbine. Steam must be condensed back to liquid before being returned to the steam generator.
